Writing Notes - Tory L. Cox
1. Get to know your target audience. Visit places where your target audience is. Schools,
malls, a family get together, and parks.
2. Take notes. Always carry a small notebook with you at all times. There is always a
story around you. Example: A girl crying in the recess line. (Is she hurt? Did she fall down
and who did it? Is she crying because she just lost something special.) There is always
stories around you.
3. Research. Don't include info you're not sure about without doing research first. Don't
talk about a typhoon in Illinois.
4. Show don't tell. Example: Matthew was mad. Matthew's face turned red as he
clenched his fists together and stomped his cleat into the ground.
5. Don't send fiction manuscripts to a publisher who only takes non-fiction.
6. Research. Research. RESEARCH.
7. Don't take rejections personally.
8. Do your research on agents and publishers. Always remember with a publisher they
want to sell your book to your reading audience not to you. Watch out for scams all over.
9. Remember writing takes practice and to get better at something you need to practice
and practice some more.
10. Take time out each day to write.
